Pilot Course: Low Carbon Tourism Destinations & Low Carbon Rural Development

Low Carbon development is a cross-cutting and multisectoral issue (land use and spatial planning; energy supply; energy efficiency; buildings and construction; transports; industry; retail & services; food system; waste and water; Green infrastructure and natural hazards).

TowardsLCS Pilot Courses approach this broad challenge by developing stie specific sectoral case studies,  yet from a integrated point of view. For the Pilot Case in Girona, two extreme destinations representing two of the main develoment drivers in the Region have been chosen.

On one hand, the city of Lloret de Mar (>30.000 inhab.), which is an exponent of mass tourism, the primary exporting sector in the Province, with more than 5 million visitors per year.

On the other, the rural municipality of Vilademuls (<1.000 inhab.), as an example of Girona’s agri-food sector dynamics, with agriculture and animal farming under intensification trends and strong exporting capacity.

With the aim of exploring low carbon transitions for these two opposite realities, the Pilot Course will break students into two groups, send them to either destination for 10 days, and provide each group with a full training and fieldwork program. Students will explore and analyze from a low carbon society point of view current and future development trends for specific economic sectors. In Lloret de Mar target topics will be transports and accommodation facilities. In Vilademuls, target topics will be farming (including forests management) and tourism services. Furthermore, under the concept of Dialogues a parallel program of workshops and presentations will seek to engage the local community with the PC, in order to share and discuss the challenges of low carbon transitions.

Case Study Municipalities and Aim:

    • Lloret de Mar – Low Carbon Tourism

Aim:  Dialogues around: “The future of tourism areas versus the tourism areas of the future”

    • Vilademuls – Low Carbon Rural Development

Aim: Dialogues around:  “The future of rural areas versus the rural areas of the future”

Objectives

    • Lloret de Mar – Low Carbon Tourism
  1. To measure, analyze and represent in maps and graphs the carbon footprint of Lloret de Mar’s tourism mobility and transports.
  2. To calculate and represent in maps and graphs the carbon footprint of the tourism Lloret de Mar’s accommodation sector.
  3. To explore low carbon certification and transition initiatives for both the mobility and accommodation sectors of Lloret de Mar.
  4. To debate with the community and stakeholders about the future of tourism destinations and transitions to low carbon tourism.
    • Vilademuls – Low Carbon Rural Development
  1. To measure, analyze and represent in maps and graphs the carbon balance (footprint vs capture and storage) the biophysical matrix and farming activities of Vilademuls.
  2. To measure, analyze and represent in maps and graphs the carbon footprint of Vilademuls’s accommodation and services sectors.
  3. To assess landscape preferences by different users and analyze links of results to low carbon territories, and explore low carbon certification and transition initiatives for rural areas.
  4. To debate with the community and stakeholders about the future of rural areas and transitions to low carbon tourism.
