What methods to use?

What can you find on this page?

In this page, you will find information about the methods we used in the study modules. If you scroll down, first you find our methodological handbook. In that, there is information about how we composed our study modules and study platform. In addition, there is everything you need to compose a low-carbon society themed course.

If you scroll further down, you will find videos about the methods of our study modules.  These videos will give you information not only from the teacher point of view but also from the student point of view. If you are eager to watch more of our low-carbon society themed videos, check our YouTube channel.

At the end of the page, you will find the key methods what we used in our study modules.

Basics of the course organization

All of the courses were based on intensive approximately 14 days working.

In all of the courses, students were divided into the smaller groups which all had their own specific research topic.

In all of the courses, students presented their study outcomes at the final seminar.

Pre-materials are in a key role if you are planning to execute an intensive or normal course based on Low-Carbon Society theme. Giving students these kinds of materials before the course will give you a chance to start the course at a certain level without going through most basic things of the phenomena.

You can also try the flipped learning method to execute this kind of course. In a flipped learning method you can use this platform as a pre-material for students to study before they start the contact teaching part of the course. This part of the course can straight be more advanced as they already master the basics.

Work-life related case study visits

The most important part of all of the pilot courses were the case study visits which were executed together with work-life partners. This visits gave students knowledge of problems, solutions, and methods used in work life. It would also be appropriate that students research question is highly connected to working life so that visits really support their working.

Interviews and surveys

Interviews and surveys can be used as a support for case study visits. In these interviews and surveys, you can interview or ask survey questions from citizens or experts. For instance, you can ask citizens questions about their behaviour or from experts about their understanding of policies.

Effectively communicating seminar presentations

The most important part of the working might be to make presentations as effective as possible. You should arrange should arrange some lectures from communications experts to give students ideas on how to make an effective presentation. You should also consider the aims of the presentations before you choose which kind of presentations they are going to make. For instance, pitching kind of video could be a solution when the target audience is the general public. For the science community, the presentation could be, for example, a poster. Nevertheless, some expert guidance before working is necessary.
